You’re No Good…
I was listening to some stand-up comedy on a drive to work recently that I grabbed off of Rhapsody*. Christopher Titus came on and had me laughing so hard I almost had to pull over. It was his Love is Evol cd that he recorded for Valentine’s Day.
The most truth he spoke about was what he called his “inner retard”. This is the voice in our heads that tells us that we are not good enough, smart enough, and all the other Stuart Smalley affirmations. I was in tears…
The scary thing is that it’s so true. We all have that voice in our heads that just won’t shut up. The one that tells you that you don’t deserve a new car, or that you’re a bad parent, or that girls/guys aren’t into you… Most of the time it’s utter bullsh@t, and should be ignored. Too bad it’s LOUD and obnoxious!
I’m finding though, that as I attempt to practice mindfulness, I’m more aware then ever about that little a@@hole. I can take a back seat in a way, and just observe him go on and on and on and on, and then I’m like, “are you done yet?”, and he goes away. It’s pretty sweet, but makes me realize how many things in life I might have missed because I wasn’t even aware that he was there!
Man I love this practice!
*Rhapsody is a paid subscription service that I’ve been using for years. It’s about $10 a month and you can stream almost any music you want, and download the songs to your mp3 players, etc… I love it, and I found Chris Titus on there. You can probably find him up on Youtube as well, but I just felt good paying for it, cause it’s FUNNY haha.
