What Is Your New Year’s Resolution?

I know, I know, it’s been a while since I’ve really updated this blog.  I’ve been super busy with work and other projects.  I’m changing that this year and will be updating this blog more frequently.

That said, Happy New Year!

Many people tell me that 2017 was the worst year.  On the surface, sure, it was a crazy ride.  Trump took the reigns as President, we had massive protests, there were a number of senseless terrorist attacks and lone gunman crazies, and we entered what some are calling a post-truth society… Blah!

The truth is, 2017 was no better or worse than any other year.  It just “was”.  The hard part is separating our perception of reality from actual reality.  That is crazy difficult when we are addicted to social media and propaganda.

Messages are always vying for our attention, and “man bites dog” always wins.  Look at all the click-bait we see in our news feeds.  Many of those messages are designed to catch our attention, distract us, get us to click and “find out what number 7 is” in the headline and why the author can’t believe it…  Then, when we get there, it’s usually some garbage surrounded by ads that make the author money.  Mostly irrelevant stuff.

Where am I going with this?  Perception is everything.  Reality is not on social media, but in our every day experiences.  As we enter this new year, we should all challenge ourselves to look beyond the hype and latest outrage and focus on our own experiences, both local, national, personal, and shared.

When we practice mindfulness, we enter the space where reality, true reality, blossoms.  The crap and loud messaging falls away and we are left with pure experience.  That should be our goal.  That should be our collective resolution.  That will be our reality.
